Tragedy in Foster Care: Justice Sought After Death of 10-Year-Old Dakota Levi Stevens
In a harrowing case that has shaken the nation, 10-year-old Dakota Levi Stevens tragically lost his life just one month after being placed in foster care. His foster mother, 48-year-old Jennifer Lee Wilson of Berrien County, Michigan, has pleaded guilty to reckless homicide following the boy’s untimely and brutal death on April 25, 2024.
The details are deeply disturbing. After reportedly running away earlier that day, Dakota was found at a neighbor’s home, pleading for help. Court documents reveal he begged the woman to adopt him and claimed he had been hit by his foster parents.
When Wilson brought Dakota home, he acted out — throwing himself to the ground. Her response was fatal: she sat on top of the 90-pound child for nearly five minutes, using her full 340-pound weight. During this time, she was on the phone with his caseworker and believed Dakota was faking when he stopped moving. By the time a child in the home called 911, it was too late.
An autopsy revealed the cause of death was mechanical asphyxia due to crushing injuries. Dakota suffered massive internal trauma. He died two days later on life support.
Wilson’s other foster children have since been removed. Dakota, remembered for his love of nature and spirited personality, was failed by a system meant to protect him.
