A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the border region between Myanmar and China, sending powerful tremors across parts of Southeast Asia.

The shallow earthquake caused severe shaking near the epicenter, damaging buildings and infrastructure and triggering widespread panic. Communities in Myanmar were among the hardest hit, while parts of China and northern Thailand also experienced strong tremors. Shaking was even reported in Bangkok, hundreds of kilometers away.

Emergency responders faced significant challenges as roads, bridges, buildings, and communications infrastructure were damaged. Early reports indicated deaths and hundreds of injuries, with hospitals treating people hurt by collapsing structures and falling debris.

The disaster highlighted the region’s vulnerability to major earthquakes and the importance of preparedness, resilient infrastructure, and rapid emergency response.
