I was driving home on Highway 52 when I saw a motorcycle pulled over. I nearly kept going—bikers always seemed like the tough, silent type. But something made me slow down.
The man beside the bike was kneeling in the grass, holding a small bundle wrapped in a blue towel. His shoulders shook. As I got closer, I saw the tears on his dust-covered face. Inside the towel was a tiny German Shepherd puppy, injured and barely breathing.
“She was crying,” he said softly. “Someone hit her and drove off. I couldn’t just ride past.”
Right then, every stereotype I’d ever had about bikers fell apart. Compassion doesn’t always wear a suit—sometimes, it wears leather and rides a Harley.
We rushed her to the nearest animal hospital in my car. The biker—Robert, but his friends called him Nomad—held her the whole way, whispering, “You’re safe now, baby girl.”
A few days later, I called to check in. She’d survived. He named her Hope.
When I visited, she was curled in his lap, tail wagging through the bandages. He smiled. “Told you she’d make it.”
