Passerby Who Killed Man Attacking Cop Learns His Fate

In a case originally reported in February 2017, Florida authorities ruled that Ashad Russell would not face criminal charges after fatally shooting Edward Strother, who was attacking Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy Dean Bardes during a traffic stop. Investigators concluded Russell acted lawfully after Bardes, who was pinned to the ground and repeatedly punched, instructed him to shoot. Russell, a licensed concealed-carry permit holder, fired after warning Strother to stop the assault. The State Attorney’s Office determined his use of deadly force was justified to prevent imminent death or serious bodily harm to the deputy, officially closing the investigation without charges.
