A few weeks after saying goodbye to our beloved black lab-greyhound, my daughter and I visited the shelter to donate her belongings. It wasn’t an ordinary shelter—there were horses, goats, and bunnies too. As we wandered through, most animals paid us no mind—until a black lab mix came bounding down his run. He didn’t bark, just “talked” loudly and followed us with such personality, as if saying, “Hey, I’m your guy!”

We kept walking, but he followed us along the fence, still trying to get our attention. When we returned, my daughter insisted we couldn’t leave him. A volunteer brought him out—and this big, 80-pound lab climbed into her lap, looked at us upside down, and waved his paw. We couldn’t say no. By Monday, he was ours.
It felt like fate. If you’re looking for a pet, consider a rescue. Sometimes, the right dog finds you.
