When Jeni first met her husband Ray, she was certain she didn’t want children. Ray, however, dreamed of having at least four. More than 30 years later, life took them far beyond those early expectations. From their home in Toowoomba, Queensland, Jeni and Ray Bonell became parents to sixteen children — nine boys and seven girls — forming what is now known as Australia’s biggest family.

Life in the Bonell household is a daily balancing act of food, chores, school runs, and laughter. With eight children still living at home, meals are massive and laundry never ends. Jeni spends around $600 a week on groceries, going through 50 liters of milk and dozens of eggs and yogurt tubs.

Organization is key. Children as young as eight help with chores, and by twelve, each can cook a meal for twenty. Jeni even shares her budget-friendly cooking tips online to help other families.

Despite the challenges, Jeni and Ray wouldn’t have it any other way. They rely on faith, love, and teamwork — not government support — to make it all work. For them, raising sixteen children isn’t a burden, but a joyful, lifelong adventure built on patience, humor, and deep family connection.
