Jiang Yancheng once lived folded in half — quite literally. Diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a rare spinal condition that causes the spine to curve progressively, his body bent so severely that his head was pressed against his back. He couldn’t sit, stand, or lie flat. His height dropped to just one meter.

Despite unimaginable pain and limitations, Jiang never gave up. Unable to attend school, he studied lying on his side, using pillows and cushions to prop up books and support his arms. Against all odds, he passed China’s rigorous college entrance exam and was accepted into a top university’s energy program.

After living 21 years with this condition, Jiang’s life took a dramatic turn when a team of surgeons offered him hope. Over the course of a year, he underwent four high-risk surgeries to rebuild his spine. The final operation lasted 12 hours, with the lead surgeon kneeling on the table to align his vertebrae.

When Jiang awoke, he lay flat for the first time in his life—without pain. Today, he walks upright with a cane, filled with new goals and dreams. He now hopes to earn a master’s degree and one day teach.
His story is a powerful reminder: with resilience and the right support, even the most unimaginable challenges can be overcome.
