When I moved to Berlin for work, loneliness hit harder than I expected. One rainy Saturday, I wandered into a Tierheim — a German animal shelter — just to get out of the rain.

Inside, the air felt calm. Volunteers spoke softly in German and English, kneeling beside kennels where tails trembled.
A sign on the wall caught my eye: By law, shelters in Germany cannot euthanize healthy animals. Only those who are gravely ill or dangerous may be considered. Every other life is protected — as long as it takes.

At the back of one kennel sat a small brown-eared dog named Momo. “He needs time,” a volunteer said. “No rush — he can stay here as long as he needs.” Momo had been found tied to a fence. In other places, he might have run out of time. Here, time itself was the gift.

On my third visit, his tail wagged like a tiny flag. “He chooses you,” the volunteer laughed.
The day I brought him home, they gave me his medical records, training notes, and their number for any questions. As we left, Momo paused at the door — as if to say goodbye to the people who believed he was worth saving.

Now he naps beside my desk and greets every neighbor like an old friend. When people ask how we found each other, I tell them: in Germany, shelters protect life — and that safety gave us the chance to become a family.
