If you notice red, irritated-looking circles on your dog’s belly, it can be alarming. In many cases, however, the cause is far less serious than it appears.
The Morinville Veterinary Clinic recently reassured pet owners that these spots are often simple fly bites. Dogs typically get them after lying in grass during certain times of year. The marks may look uncomfortable, but most dogs are not bothered by them, and they usually fade without treatment.
Experts, including representatives from the American Veterinary Medical Association, note that black flies are a common culprit across North America, especially in northern regions. Their bites can leave small red circles on areas with less fur, such as the stomach.
That said, similar marks can sometimes signal allergies, infections, or other skin conditions. If the spots worsen, ooze, cause itching, or your dog seems unwell, a veterinary visit is wise.
In most cases, though, these seasonal bites resolve quickly with simple monitoring and care.
