Tragedy on the Farm: Deadly Gas Buildup Claims Young Farmer and 16 Cattle

The small town of Amherst, Wisconsin, was shaken by a tragic accident at Biadasz Farms that claimed the life of 29-year-old farmer Michael Biadasz and 16 cattle. Michael was found dead in a manure holding tank, along with 13 cattle that died immediately, and three more that passed away later. Investigators discovered that a rare atmospheric event created a “deadly dome” of toxic gases—primarily methane or hydrogen sulfide—that became trapped near the ground due to warm air and low pressure.

Although Michael had safely emptied the tank many times before, the unusual weather conditions created a perfect storm that left no chance of escape. His father, Bob Biadasz, called it a tragic and unpredictable event. Officials confirmed that abnormal atmospheric pressure prevented the toxic gases from dispersing naturally.

The incident has renewed calls for stricter safety regulations around manure storage. The National Agriculture Safety Database recommends improved ventilation, warning signs, and protective measures for both workers and livestock. Similar incidents, like a 2007 tragedy in Virginia, underline the recurring danger of toxic manure gases.

To honor Michael’s memory, his family lined tractors and trucks along the roadside, including his black pickup, as a solemn tribute to a life lost too soon.
