Teenage Cheerleader with Down Syndrome Bullied, Then Basketball Players Pause Game to Support Her

Bullying is a serious issue that affects not only victims, but entire communities. It takes courage to speak up—but three middle schoolers from Lincoln Middle School in Wisconsin did just that.

During a basketball game, their friend Desiree Andrews, a cheerleader with Down syndrome, was being mocked by bullies in the crowd. Instead of ignoring it, Scooter Terrien, Chase Vasquez, and Miles Rodriguez stepped off the bench during a timeout and calmly confronted the bullies, making it clear their behavior wouldn’t be tolerated.

Their bravery sent a powerful message, inspiring classmates and deeply moving Desiree’s family. Her father, holding back tears, expressed how grateful he was for their support.

This story reminds us all: bullying can be stopped when bystanders become upstanders. With empathy and action, even small moments can lead to big change. Like these three boys showed, kindness always matters—and it can make all the difference.
