Supreme Court Rules On Redrawn Alabama Congressional Map

The U.S. Supreme Court has allowed Alabama to use a Republican-favored congressional map for the 2026 midterm elections, overturning a lower court ruling that found the map intentionally discriminated against Black voters. In an unsigned order, the Court’s conservative majority cited the Purcell principle, which discourages federal courts from changing election rules close to an election. The decision is expected to produce six Republican-leaning districts and one Democratic-leaning district, potentially affecting control of the House of Representatives. The Court’s three liberal justices dissented, arguing the ruling undermines voting rights and could reduce Black voters’ political influence.
