It’s always heartbreaking to hear of an abandoned dog, especially one left with her puppies. But thanks to SPCA Westchester, one dog’s tragic beginning is becoming a story of hope.

Recently, a mother dog and her four puppies were abandoned just steps from SPCA Westchester’s entrance — a no-kill shelter in New York. The mother, later named Nora, had two puppies tied to her; the others were left loose in a cardboard box. Volunteers acted quickly. Nora, terrified and trembling, was gently leashed and brought to safety with her pups.

Thankfully, all five dogs were healthy. The puppies soon found foster care and eventually forever homes. Nora, believed to be a Vizsla–Rhodesian Ridgeback mix, remained behind. Wary and reserved, she was often overlooked by potential adopters.

“She’s a goofy moose once she warms up,” said Gabrielle, a shelter volunteer. “It’s a privilege to earn her trust.”

Now, the shelter is on a mission to find Nora the loving home she deserves. Her story, shared online, has touched millions.

She may not be the easiest dog to love at first—but for the right person, she’ll be the most loyal companion they’ve ever known.

Nora is still waiting. But she hasn’t been forgotten.
