The sky looked torn open. People stopped, stared, and whispered about portals, omens, and secret weapons. But behind the eerie glowing ring was a rare natural phenomenon called a fallstreak hole. Mid-level clouds can contain supercooled water droplets that remain liquid below freezing. When an aircraft passes through, its wings can trigger some droplets to freeze into ice crystals. These crystals cause nearby droplets to evaporate, creating a widening circular gap. Sunlight passing through can illuminate the ice and vapor, making the opening appear like a glowing doorway. No portal or weapon—just atmospheric physics. Yet even when science explains it, the wonder remains.
