Orphaned Bear Cub Makes Incredible Recovery After Near-Death Rescue
In December 2024, a young black bear cub was found in El Dorado County, California, in a heartbreaking condition — severely malnourished, dehydrated, and suffering from anemia and a painful skin infection. Rescuers from Gold Country Wildlife Rescue (GCWR) rushed him to safety, knowing his odds were slim. Weighing just 20 pounds, he barely resembled a bear.
The team immediately developed a specialized treatment plan, and over several weeks, signs of hope emerged. Fur began growing back on his once-bare face, and his energy slowly returned. Staff kept their distance to maintain his wild instincts, while enriching his enclosure with toys and a hammock.
By February 2025, his transformation amazed everyone. Though his recovery was remarkable, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife decided not to release him back into the wild, opting instead to place him in a sanctuary for his continued well-being.
On May 13, GCWR shared a touching update: the cub was healthy, vaccinated, and soon heading to his new forever home. His story is a powerful testament to resilience and the dedication of wildlife rescuers. Despite a tragic start, this brave bear now has a second chance at life.
