In December 2020, the world was reminded of the incredible courage of Miriam Elizabeth Rodríguez Martínez, a mother from San Fernando, Tamaulipas, Mexico, who took on the notorious Los Zetas cartel after her daughter Karen was kidnapped and murdered in 2012.
Despite paying a ransom, Karen’s remains were found in 2014. Devastated but determined, Miriam transformed into a one-woman detective. Using disguises, fake IDs, and even a toy gun, she tracked down her daughter’s killers. Her fearless efforts led to the arrest of at least ten cartel members, including Cristian Jose Zapata Gonzalez and a man known as “Sama,” who was found working at an ice cream shop.
Her mission, however, came at a tragic cost. On Mother’s Day in 2017, Miriam was shot and killed outside her home. Her death shocked the nation, but her legacy lives on.
Today, her son Luis leads a group of over 600 families still searching for missing loved ones. In a region plagued by impunity, Miriam’s story stands as a powerful symbol of a mother’s love and the unyielding fight for justice.
