Media Pioneer and Philanthropist Ted Turner Dies at 87

Ted Turner, the visionary founder of CNN and one of America’s most influential media entrepreneurs, has died at age 87. His death marks the end of an extraordinary life that transformed television news, professional sports, conservation, and philanthropy. Turner died peacefully surrounded by his family, according to Turner Enterprises.

His greatest achievement was CNN, launched in 1980 as the first 24-hour cable news network. What many considered a risky idea eventually changed how millions of people followed breaking news around the world.

But Turner’s legacy went far beyond television. He donated $1 billion to support United Nations initiatives and became a major conservationist, preserving more than two million acres of land and supporting efforts to protect endangered species.

He also owned professional sports teams, competed in sailing, and won the America’s Cup in 1977. His bold personality and willingness to take enormous risks became central to his public image.

For decades, Turner demonstrated that business success could be used to pursue larger goals. His work in media changed journalism, while his philanthropy and conservation efforts created a legacy that will continue long after his passing.

Ted Turner will be remembered not simply as the man who created CNN, but as a fearless entrepreneur who challenged established industries and used his fortune to support causes around the world.
