A strange discovery left rescuers at the Heart of the Forest center scratching their heads after finding a tiny black-furred creature they couldn’t identify. The animal, small and unlike anything they’d seen, quickly became a social media mystery when the center posted photos online.

Was it a kitten? A squirrel? A bunny, maybe? Guesses poured in—from ferret to puppy, even “mini teddy bear” and “alien visitor.”

The truth surprised everyone: the mysterious baby was a newborn domestic rabbit, just three or four days old.

She had a few small injuries but was otherwise okay. Even more incredible, she wasn’t found by a person—but by a dog. The dog gently carried the rabbit in its mouth and brought her to safety.

What puzzled rescuers most was how a domestic rabbit—rarely found in the wild—ended up alone in nature. There were no rabbit owners or breeders nearby.

The team shared a helpful comparison photo to show the difference: wild rabbits are born with fur and open eyes, while domestic rabbits are born blind and hairless.

Though her origins remain a mystery, the baby bunny is now safe, warm, and cared for—all thanks to a compassionate dog and the quick work of animal rescuers.
