When Bryant Fritz went fishing one cold November afternoon, he never expected to save a life. In the icy waters of Kaufman Lake, he spotted a puppy trapped inside a metal crate, barely keeping her head above the freezing surface. Without hesitation, he stripped off his warm layers and waded into the water to rescue her.
The puppy, later named Dory, was suffering from hypothermia and severe injuries. Fritz rushed her to the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital, where she began her recovery. Though authorities are still investigating the cruel abandonment, Fritz focused on Dory’s healing—and made it clear he wanted to adopt her. Inspired by her determination to survive, he and his girlfriend chose the name Dory, after the brave Pixar character. Thanks to one man’s quick thinking and compassion, a helpless dog was given a second chance at life—and a forever home filled with love, warmth, and hope.
