Dad Donates Kidney to Save Daughter’s Life After Losing Their First Child

Karen Rodas and Paul Rybkin’s firstborn, Nathaniel, lived only 36 hours due to Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), a rare condition that causes cysts on the kidneys and can lead to organ failure. When their second child, Maddy, was born in 2013, she was also diagnosed with PKD.

For the first 18 months of her life, Maddy was in and out of hospitals, dealing with a swollen stomach, constant vomiting, and extreme fatigue. She slept up to 18 hours a day, and doctors warned she might not survive without a kidney transplant.

Her father Paul turned out to be a match—and didn’t hesitate to donate his kidney to save his daughter’s life. “Any father would have done what I did,” he said.

The transplant was a success. Maddy transformed into a happy, energetic two-year-old with a bright future ahead. Her mother Karen shared, “Daddy’s kidney has saved our little girl.”
