Kissing Bugs and Chagas Disease: A Hidden Danger at Home

A Silent Summertime Threat

Summer brings sunshine and outdoor fun — but also pests. One lesser-known danger is the kissing bug (triatomine), a nocturnal, blood-sucking insect linked to Chagas disease. These bugs often bite around the mouth or eyes during sleep, earning their unsettling name.

Where They Hide and How to Spot Them

Kissing bugs hide in cracks, crevices, and animal nests during the day. At night, they follow carbon dioxide in our breath to find a host. They may enter homes through gaps, broken screens, or foundations. Look for a dark, oval-shaped body about an inch long, with a cone-shaped head and red or yellow markings.

Why They’re Dangerous

The danger isn’t the bite, but the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi in their feces. If rubbed into eyes, mouth, or a wound, it can cause Chagas disease — a serious illness with flu-like symptoms early on, and potential heart or digestive issues years later.

Prevention and Protection

If bitten, seek medical care — especially in southern U.S. or Central America. Seal cracks, fix screens, reduce nighttime lighting, and keep brush away. Don’t crush the bug; trap it safely. Awareness, prevention, and early treatment are key to protecting your family from this hidden summer threat.
