I’m 53, a high school physics teacher, and never had kids.

I’ve taught high school physics in Ohio for over 20 years, but nothing prepared me for the night I found my brightest student, Ethan, curled up on the freezing floor of a parking garage. My heart broke when he begged me not to tell anyone. He explained that his father and stepmother often threw chaotic parties, filling the house with strangers, yelling, and even violence. For three nights, Ethan had chosen concrete over the danger of his own home.

The signs suddenly made sense—the late assignments, exhaustion, and the spark that had dimmed from his eyes. This boy, who once lit up at the mysteries of black holes and dreamed of changing the world, was struggling just to survive.

That night, I brought him home. I made him soup, gave him clean clothes, and watched as he took a long hot shower. When he fell asleep on my couch, I knew everything had changed.

The road ahead wasn’t easy—guardianship meant court battles, social workers, and resistance from his father. But I was determined. No child should have to sleep on concrete. Ethan deserved safety, love, and the chance to shine again. And I would fight to give him that.
