Her fur was thin, and her paws shook as she stood in the cold grass. Reese, a 13-year-old dachshund mix, had been left alone on a stranger’s property with nothing but a torn note beside her. 
The paper said she was loved once, but life had run out of space for her. The words were shaky, the ink smudged — a goodbye written by someone who didn’t stay.
Reese didn’t understand why no one came back. She just waited, quiet and trembling, her eyes fixed on the road.
Every sound made her lift her head, hoping it was them. But the only answer was the wind.
