Officer Kareem Garibaldi of the Lakeland Police Department in Florida found a small pit bull-boxer mix wandering alone through a neighborhood early one Saturday morning during his patrol. The puppy had no collar, and efforts to locate her owner were unsuccessful. Not wanting to leave her alone, Garibaldi took her back to the station and later brought her home after his shift.

The next day, after another 12-hour shift, he again tried to find the owner. Still unsuccessful, he went a step further. Despite being exhausted from working three consecutive long shifts, Garibaldi took the puppy to SPCA Florida for a checkup first thing in the morning.

When shelter manager Connie Johnson arrived, she was moved by the sight of the officer asleep beside the puppy, both clearly worn out. “It was one of those moments that grab your heart,” she said. “He wasn’t thinking about himself—he was thinking about saving that puppy.”
The dog, later named Hope, returned to the station with Garibaldi, where her story took a joyful turn: a dispatcher instantly fell in love with her and adopted her the same day.

Garibaldi’s selfless actions touched many. “This gentleman has such a heart,” said Johnson.
