In April 2021, a dog named Buddy was the victim of an unthinkable act of cruelty—set on fire, his face scorched, and an extension cord wrapped around his neck. A child later admitted to the act but couldn’t be prosecuted due to his age.
Described as happy and gentle, Buddy was taken in by the Tunica Humane Society in Mississippi. He received emergency care at Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, where vets faced an uphill battle to save him.
“Burn wounds are slow to heal,” said Dr. Elizabeth Swanson. But Buddy’s spirit never faltered. He endured skin grafts, full-body bandages, and daily treatments—yet remained sweet and resilient.
Despite the horror, Buddy’s eyesight was miraculously intact. And months later, a huge milestone: his bandages were removed without sedation, and Buddy could see again for the first time since the attack. His joy was instant.
“His personality has changed completely,” said Sandy Williams of the Humane Society. “He’s playful, happy, and carries his favorite ball everywhere.”
Though Buddy will have lifelong special needs—sensitive skin, eye care, limited sun exposure—his recovery is a powerful testament to hope, healing, and the kindness of strangers who refused to give up on him.
