Creosote is a major fire hazard in homes with fireplaces, wood stoves, or wood-fired ovens. It forms when smoke and unburned particles cool and accumulate inside chimneys and flues. Creosote develops in three stages, ranging from light, flaky deposits to thick, highly combustible glaze. Because it can ignite easily, buildup may lead to chimney fires exceeding 2,000°F, causing severe structural damage. Warning signs include dark stains, smoky odors, poor airflow, black debris, and unusual sounds during fires. To reduce risk, burn seasoned hardwood, maintain proper airflow, keep fires hot, and schedule annual chimney inspections and professional cleanings.
