Devastating Dog Attack Claims Life of Infant Ember Southard
On March 14, baby Ember Southard tragically lost her life following a dog attack at a family member’s home in Shelby County, Alabama. The 11-year-old American Bully had never shown aggression before. Ember’s mother, Anna, left her briefly to take her grandmother to a doctor’s appointment, trusting family to watch Ember for just 20 minutes.
Anna rushed home after a call and arrived moments after the ambulance. She collapsed in the driveway upon seeing her daughter’s lifeless body. Despite the trauma team’s efforts, Ember was pronounced dead at 1:10 p.m.
The family dog responsible was quarantined, and an investigation is underway. A relative—who is epileptic—had fallen asleep with Ember on their chest when the attack occurred.
Ember was lovingly nicknamed “Noodle” for her soft toes and sweet nature. Anna, heartbroken, expressed deep sorrow but chose not to press charges. However, she says she will never forgive the family member whose neglect she believes caused Ember’s death.
A GoFundMe has been created to support funeral costs. Anna urges parents: “Keep dogs away from babies. Follow safe sleep. Any dog, no matter how gentle, can kill a child. Hold your babies close. It’s never worth the risk.”
