Timothy Treadwell became world-famous in 2003 after a tragic encounter with a brown bear in Alaska’s Katmai National Park. Known as the “Grizzly Man,” Treadwell spent 13 summers living among wild bears, driven by a mission to protect them after overcoming a heroin addiction. His deep connection with the animals was captured in his memoir Among Grizzlies.
In October 2003, Treadwell and his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, were fatally attacked by a bear. A chilling six-minute audio recording from that night captured their final moments. Treadwell can be heard screaming that he’s being killed, while Huguenard tries to help, urging him to “play dead.” Despite her efforts, the bear returns. Treadwell pleads for her to hit it, while she screams for him to fight.
The recording ends with Treadwell’s voice fading, leaving only Huguenard’s screams. The tragedy shocked the world and remains one of the most haunting stories of human-wildlife encounters.
