In California, Kerri and Larry Ruiz experienced every pet owner’s nightmare when a coyote jumped into their backyard and snatched their Chihuahua, Chico.
“I saw Chico in the coyote’s mouth,” Kerri recalled, describing the terrifying moment.

With no time to lose, Kerri grabbed their “secret weapon” — an air horn kept by the back door. One deafening blast was enough. The startled coyote dropped Chico and ran.
The couple says they keep air horns at every exit, just in case. This time, it saved a life.
Chico, though injured with a broken rib and scratches, is recovering well and surrounded by love. The Ruizes now warn others never to leave pets unattended outdoors.

“He’s our miracle dog,” Larry said.
Their quick thinking and a simple $10 air horn turned tragedy into a survival story.
