A recently resurfaced video shows Representative Rashida Tlaib refusing to explicitly condemn

The nation was recently shaken by a violent attack on two National Guardsmen in Washington, D.C., carried out by Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, which left one guard dead and another injured. The attacker had entered the U.S. under the Biden administration’s Operation Allies Welcome program in 2021, raising renewed concerns about immigration vetting, refugee resettlement, and national security. As the country grappled with these fears, an older video resurfaced online showing Representative Rashida Tlaib refusing to condemn chants of “Death to America” at a rally in her Michigan district, intensifying political debate during an already tense moment.

The footage came from an April 5, 2024 demonstration in Dearborn, Michigan, held for the International Day of Al-Quds. Protesters gathered outside the Henry Ford Centennial Library, where some were heard chanting “death to America” and “death to Israel” in Arabic. Days later, Fox Business reporter Hillary Vaughn questioned Tlaib on Capitol Hill, asking if she condemned the chants. Tlaib repeatedly avoided answering, stating, “I do not talk to Fox News,” and accusing the network of racism and Islamophobia. Despite being asked multiple times, she offered no clear condemnation. The video, shared widely on X, quickly sparked controversy and political backlash.

Republican Senator Rick Scott criticized Tlaib’s refusal, calling it “disgusting” for any American, especially a member of Congress. Legal analysts also pointed out how many times she sidestepped the question. Meanwhile, Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud publicly distanced the community from the inflammatory chants, stressing that they did not represent Dearborn’s values. “We reject all inflammatory and violent statements,” he wrote, reaffirming that the city stands for peace and justice.

The resurfaced Tlaib clip gained traction partly because it coincided with the tragic D.C. shooting involving Lakanwal, who had overstayed his visa after arriving through a humanitarian program. The victims, guardswoman Sarah Beckstrom and guardsman Andrew Wolfe, were attacked near the White House on Thanksgiving Eve. Beckstrom later died from her wounds. The incident prompted former President Donald Trump to blame President Biden for allowing Lakanwal into the country, reigniting fierce immigration debates.

Together, these events highlight the intersection of political rhetoric, national security concerns, and public accountability. They reveal the challenges leaders face in addressing extremist speech, maintaining community trust, and ensuring the safety of Americans while balancing humanitarian responsibilities.
