Bad News for Smokers

What is really happening in France is not a dramatic midnight ban, but a calculated, long-term strategy to make smoking harder to afford and harder to ignore. Cigarettes remain legal, sold in the same tobacconists, but the financial pressure is intensifying. A pack that once cost around €3 in the early 2000s now hovers near €12.50–€13, with premium brands even higher. Around three-quarters of that price is tax, deliberately designed to hurt the habit more than the product.

Behind the headlines is a clear political choice: discourage smoking without declaring war on smokers. No discounts, no promos, no price battles between shops—everyone pays the same, everywhere. The goal is simple and ruthless: fewer young people lighting up, fewer long-term illnesses, fewer billions spent on care. You will still be able to buy cigarettes after May 2026. The question is: how long will you be willing to pay the price?
