The northern giant hornet, often called the “murder hornet,” is the world’s largest hornet species and a serious threat to honeybees. Native to parts of Asia, it was first confirmed in North America in 2019, raising concerns about agriculture and ecosystems. These powerful predators can attack honeybee colonies, killing thousands of bees before feeding their larvae on the hive’s developing brood. Their stings can also cause severe pain and dangerous reactions, especially after multiple attacks. Authorities have responded by setting traps, tracking captured hornets with transmitters, and destroying nests. Early detection and public reporting remain essential to preventing their spread.
