Paramedic Killed Inside His Own Ambulance After Patient Turns Violent

Kansas City firefighter paramedic Graham Hoffman, 29, was tragically killed by a patient during a routine medical call. On April 28, 2025, Hoffman was transporting 39-year-old Shanetta Bossell to the hospital after police found her disoriented on a freeway. While en route, Bossell allegedly stabbed Hoffman in the heart in the back of the ambulance. Despite immediate emergency care, Hoffman later died at North Kansas City Hospital.

Bossell attempted to hijack the ambulance but was stopped by a pursuing officer. She faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder and assault. Officials confirmed she had been released on bond just two days prior for another assault case involving a police officer.

Mayor Quinton Lucas and city officials mourned Hoffman’s death, praising his selfless service and vowing full accountability. “He was taken while saving lives,” Lucas said, calling it a painful reminder of the risks first responders face. The Kansas City Fire Department is offering grief counseling to affected members, while prosecutors consider pursuing the death penalty.

Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompson promised justice for Hoffman, stating, “Our community grieves his loss at such a young age.” Interim City Manager Kimiko Gilmore added, “We mourn the loss of a brave public servant.”
