Lucas Martin, a 21-year-old University of Liverpool graduate from England, tragically died on September 12, 2023, just days after he began feeling unwell. His family initially believed he was suffering from freshers’ flu, a common illness among students, unaware he had meningitis. Lucas first complained of headaches and fever, symptoms that seemed mild at first. His brother, Connor, told the BBC, “We just thought it was freshers’ flu,” adding that awareness of meningitis might have changed everything.
In the days before hospitalization, Lucas rested at home, showing no classic meningitis signs like a rash or light sensitivity. When his father, Brett, called five days later, Lucas was struggling to speak. His uncle rushed to check on him and found him critically ill. Despite being placed in an induced coma, Lucas never recovered.
Described as ambitious and kind, Lucas’s family now campaigns to raise awareness—urging others to take flu-like symptoms seriously.
