Ashlyn, an elderly dog in a North Carolina shelter, faced a bleak future. Severely underweight and battling malignant tumors, her time seemed short—until kindness changed everything.
The New England Humane Society found a foster home willing to care for Ashlyn in her final days. All that remained was getting her there. That’s when Paul Steklenski, founder of Flying Fur Animal Rescue, stepped in.
A pilot who transports at-risk shelter dogs, Paul flew Ashlyn 450 miles to safety. During the flight, her fear slowly faded. She rested her head on Paul’s lap—a quiet moment of trust that deeply moved him. “That’s the reward in itself,” he said.
Upon arrival, foster mom Tracy Lander was heartbroken by Ashlyn’s condition—just 39 pounds, far below her healthy weight. She immediately began feeding her nutritious meals, offering love, care, and the companionship of two other dogs.
To everyone’s surprise, Ashlyn began to thrive. Her coat grew shinier, her energy returned, and she bonded with her new family.
What began as a hospice rescue turned into months of joy and healing. “She knows she’s loved,” Tracy said.
