Puddles may sound like a fitting name for a mischievous puppy, but for one Florida deputy and his family, it became the perfect name for a dog with a remarkable story of survival. Last month, deputies from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office were leaving a call when faint whimpering drew their attention. Deputy Troy Glover, assigned to an eviction on Sloan Road in Fort Pierce, traced the sound to a septic drain behind the property. Inside, struggling to keep his head above the dirty water, was a small puppy.

The pup was frightened and agitated, but Glover quickly called fellow deputy Gettings for help. Using a catch pole, they carefully pulled the dog to safety. His hind legs were weak, and his fur was filthy, so the deputies rushed him to the Humane Society of St. Lucie County. There, staff bathed him, treated him for possible infection, and gave him vaccinations and care. Remarkably, despite his ordeal, the puppy’s spirit remained joyful.

When no owner came forward, Deputy Gettings welcomed the dog into his home. Now named Puddles, the once-trapped pup enjoys lounging with his new family, which includes Gettings’ wife, their young daughter, and their basset hound, Lacie—a happy ending for a lucky rescue.
