Authorities Raid Soros-Backed Groups Over $3 Billion Foreign Funding Scandal

India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched a significant crackdown on organizations linked to billionaire George Soros, conducting raids at eight locations connected to the Open Society Foundations (OSF) and its subsidiary, the Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF). The raids are part of an ongoing investigation into alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Authorities claim these NGOs used a complex network to funnel foreign funds into India, disguising them as consultancy fees and investment flows. Preliminary reports suggest that over $3 billion may have been routed into Indian NGOs, despite restrictions placed on foreign funding since 2016 by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Officials allege that foreign direct investment was used as a cover to bypass regulations and influence domestic activities indirectly. This move has raised concerns among international civil society organizations and is expected to intensify scrutiny on foreign-funded NGOs operating within India’s regulatory framework.
