A few years ago, a powerful photo made waves on Facebook: a 15-year-old boy, covered in blood, cradling a fox with its muzzle cruelly taped shut. That boy was Luke Rowles—and that moment captured the spirit of a family devoted to compassion.
In 2007, Luke’s family moved to Rudozem, Bulgaria, and were heartbroken by the abuse faced by street animals. Inspired by Luke’s bond with a stray dog named Ranger, his parents, Tony and Diane Rowles, founded Rudozem Street Dog Rescue (RSDR).
Luke’s defining moment came when he saw a group of men brutally beating a wild fox. Without hesitation, he intervened, rescued the animal, and brought it home to be nursed back to health. Once healed, the fox was released back into the wild.
Since then, the Rowles family has rescued hundreds of dogs and cats, many now in loving homes across Europe. Despite ongoing resistance and denied shelter registration, they’ve continued their mission—offering these animals a safe, loving sanctuary.
Recently, co-founder Tony Rowles underwent major heart surgery and is recovering. The family continues their work amidst challenges.
You can follow and support RSDR via Facebook. Their bravery and kindness remind us that even quiet acts of compassion can change the world.
