When my sister spotted a strange silvery bug in her cupboard, she didn’t think much of it — until it stung her hand. Soon, more appeared around the house, hiding in corners, bookshelves, and bathrooms. These were silverfish: small, wingless insects with metallic sheen, known for their darting movements. Around for over 400 million years, they thrive in dark, humid spaces, feeding on starches, sugars, and even glue.

While silverfish rarely bite, their presence can trigger mild allergic reactions in sensitive people and damage belongings like clothing, wallpaper, and stored food. Experts warn that seeing one usually means many more are nearby.

To prevent infestations, keep areas dry and ventilated, seal cracks, store items in containers, and use natural repellents like cedar or citrus. Spotting a silverfish isn’t random — it’s a warning. Acting quickly can protect your home before these ancient insects make it theirs.
