The strange unknown dog prevented Daniel from entering his house. The dog looked at him with such a plea, it seemed as if he was trying to prevent something Daniel didn’t know yet

Daniel Wright came home from work at six o’clock in the evening. An ordinary day: meetings, emails, traffic jams. He loved his little grey house in the suburbs, especially at this hour when the last rays of the sun came to gently caress the green lawn of the garden.

But today, something was different.

Daniel climbed the three steps of the porch, took his keys out of his pocket and was about to open the door. It was at this moment that a dog ran out from behind the bushes. Medium in height, with a golden and brown coat, moist eyes. Daniel had never seen him.

The dog began to gently touch his hand with his paws, then grabbed the sleeve of his jacket. He didn’t bite, he just pulled at him, as if he wanted to pull Daniel away from the door.

“What are you doing, my friend?” said Daniel, surprised.

The dog responded with a single, short, strangled bark, which sounded more like a plea. His eyes… Daniel had never seen such an expression in the eyes of an animal. It was a human supplication, a request, almost a prayer.

He crouched down, observed the dog carefully. His paws weren’t perfectly clean, but also not too dirty: it looked like he was in someone’s care. Why was he there?

Daniel tried again to approach the door, but the dog ran in front of him and placed itself between him and the door. He began to whine, then barked softly again. This time, Daniel noticed that the dog sometimes looked to the left side of the house, where a narrow path led to the back.

Daniel’s heart began to beat faster. He felt no danger, but there was something mysterious about it. The dog didn’t want him to come into his house. Or maybe he wanted Daniel to look the other way, the one he had so often looked at.

“Okay,” Daniel said softly. Come, let’s go and see what happened.

He walked around the door and began to walk slowly towards the left side of the house. The dog immediately ran ahead of him, as if to show him the way. He would take a few steps, look back to make sure Daniel was following him, and then continue to guide.

The strange unknown dog prevented Daniel from entering his house. The dog was looking at him with such supplication, it seemed as if he was trying to prevent something Daniel didn’t know about yet.

The dog guided Daniel to the back of the house, where there was an old wooden cabin that no one had used for a long time. This part of the garden seemed to have been forgotten: tall grass, bushes that had grown for years without any supervision. Daniel rarely came here, maybe once a year, when he needed to look for something in the storage room.

The dog stopped at the door of the hut, and then began to scratch lightly the earth under the threshold. He looked at Daniel again, and this time, in his eyes, Daniel saw not only a plea, but also fatigue, as if the dog had long tried to attract the attention of humans without anyone listening to him.

Daniel approached the cabin. The door was not locked, but simply blocked by an old wooden wedge that he himself had placed there a few years earlier to prevent the wind from opening it. He removed the hold and carefully opened the door.

Inside the hut, it was dark, but the light filtering through the gaps was enough for Daniel to see a small shape curled up in a corner.

It was a puppy, very small, maybe just a few weeks old. He trembled, but his eyes were open and looked at Daniel in supplicating silence. One of his legs was stuck in an old net on the floor of the cabin, and he couldn’t free himself.

Daniel’s heart broke. He understood everything immediately. The large dog that followed him was the puppy’s mother. She had found this safe and enclosed place for her little one, but when the puppy got stuck, she couldn’t help him. So she began to seek human help.

For days, maybe longer, she’d watched around, and when she’d finally seen Daniel, she’d done all she could: she’d stood in his way, stopped him from opening the door, led him this way.

Daniel knelt on the floor of the hut and cautiously approached the puppy. The little one moaned in fear, but very weakly, as if he didn’t even have the strength to be afraid. The mother dog stood on the threshold, did not enter, but observed every movement. In his eyes, there was no more panic, only a tense wait.

“Gently, little one,” murmured Daniel. I’m going to set you free.

He gently grabbed the puppy’s paw and examined how the net had wrapped around it. It wasn’t very tight, but every move the puppy only made things worse. Daniel began slowly, patiently, to undo the meshes of the net. The puppy resisted at first, but then, as if he understood that this man was trying to help him, he calmed down and let Daniel finish his work.

Finally, after a few minutes, the leg was free. Daniel gently took the puppy in both hands, feeling how light he was, how small his ribs were. The little one moaned weakly, but when Daniel warmed him in his palms, he slowly began to relax.

Daniel came out of the cabin. The last rays of the sun still bathed the garden in a golden light. The mother dog approached, sniffed her puppy carefully, and then licked his head in long, gentle strokes. His tail began to wag slowly, then faster, and for the first time, Daniel saw that in this serious and worried animal, there was now nothing but happiness.

Daniel sat down in the grass, the puppy still in his arms, and watched this scene. The mother dog lay down next to him, placed the puppy on the warm fur of his belly, and the little one immediately began to suck, as if he had only just remembered how hungry he was.

“You’re amazing,” Daniel said to the mother dog. You fought for him. You didn’t give up.

The dog looked at him with a look of gratitude, but also something more: it seemed as if she understood every word, that she was saying, “I knew you were coming. I waited. »

That night, Daniel prepared a place for the dogs on his porch. He brought some old cushions, a bowl of water, and a few pieces of bread and meat.

The mother dog lay down quietly next to her puppy, and when Daniel looked at them one last time, he saw that both were already sleeping soundly.

The puppy’s small chest was regularly rising and falling, and the mother, even asleep, had placed a paw on her young, as if to protect it.

The next few days brought a new rhythm to Daniel’s life. He consulted a veterinarian, who told him that the puppy was malnourished but that he would recover if he received proper care. The mother dog was also examined: she was healthy, just a little tired and very, very devoted.

Daniel began to look for names. He named the mother dog Lucy, and the puppy Oliver. Lucy quickly adapted to her new life. She followed Daniel everywhere, but without obsession, with a gentle attention, as if to thank him at every step. Oliver was growing fast. Her paws, which had been stuck in the net, were now running around the garden chasing butterflies and circling around Lucy.

Three weeks later, something interesting happened. One Sunday morning, while Daniel was drinking his coffee on the veranda, a car stopped in front of his house. An elderly woman came out, with gray hair and good but sad eyes. She looked at the dogs, and her face changed: first surprise, then tears.

“It’s my Lucy,” she said, in a trembling voice. I had lost it two months ago, when I was moving. She was afraid of the noise of the truck and ran away. I searched everywhere, but—” she could not continue.

Daniel told the woman everything: how Lucy had stopped him at the door, how she had guided him to the cabin, how she had saved her puppy. The woman listened with clenched hands, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“She’s always been like that,” said the woman. Above all, she loved helping others. When I was sick, she wouldn’t leave my side. And now she’s saved her own puppy… My god.

Daniel proposed that the woman take Lucy and Oliver back, but the woman shook her head.

“I see how happy they are with you,” she said. And I see how happy you are. I can’t take them away from you. But if you allow me, I’d like to visit them from time to time. And maybe someday when Oliver grows up, I’ll be able to take one of his little ones…

Daniel smiled. He looked at Lucy, sitting at his feet, her head resting on his knee, breathing calmly. Oliver slept on his back, his little paws moving in his sleep.

“That’s an excellent idea,” he said.

From that day on, Daniel’s house became not only his home, but also that of Lucy and Oliver, and sometimes also that of that good woman who came to drink tea and spend time with the dogs. The garden, which was once silent and grey, was now filled with the sounds of running, barking and laughter.

And every night, when Daniel came home from work and walked up the steps, Lucy was already waiting for him at the door. But now she wasn’t trying to stop him. She looked at him with a warm, grateful look, wagged her tail, and stepped aside so he could open the door and enter her house.

A house where they all lived together.
